Bhutan is the Himalayan kingdom east of Nepal that caps tourist numbers through a mandatory Sustainable Development Fee, trading mass tourism for a smaller, higher-cost visitor experience built around Buddhist monasteries and the Paro Taktsang cliffside monastery. All Bhutan travel requires a licensed local operator and runs through pre-arranged itineraries; independent travel is not permitted. We currently offer Bhutan as an add-on to a Nepal trek rather than a standalone destination, most commonly the combined Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet route.
